Declutter – Junk Mail

Now that the New Year has hit
You may have heard me mutter
“Just look around at all this stuff
It’s time (again) to declutter”.
Good stuff goes to the op shop
Broken stuff into the bin
And, perhaps, I should cut down
On the stuff that’s coming in
That paper pile on the bench?
It grows without a thought
Till I can’t stand it any more
And through it, I must sort.
I bought this sign months ago
It’ll go out front, one day
My family don’t believe me
“That’s what you always say”.
Catalogues in the mailbox
Surely I can do without…?
But, you see, sometimes
I just don’t want to miss out!
Can’t resist a bargain 🍾😀

The Australian Open

It’s the last two weeks of January
And the Australian Open’s here
I do enjoy the spectacle
I’ve been going for many years.
The tournament is world-class
The tennis just can’t be beat
But, as sure as the Pope’s a Catholic,

With the tennis, comes the heat.

Since I first started going
I’ve seen a changing of the guard
Keeping track of just who’s who?
I find that really hard.
When it comes to favourites
I’m a bit stuck in the past
Lendl, Edberg, Steffi Graf…
Oh, the time it goes so fast!
I do miss Henri Leconte
He brought fun, and laughter
Now, some of our current lot
Make me miss that nice Pat Rafter.
Novak’s a modern favourite
But there’s nobody like the Fed
Will Ferrell really was spot on
“You’re like a gazelle”, he said.

Watching the Open inspires me
To play again, and join a team
I doubt I’ll win a tournament
But a girl can always dream…

Our Puppy: The Stylist

I look at the trail of destruction
Our little puppy has wrought
And try to think instead
Of all the joy she has brought.
While everything is fair game
To destroy, shred…and chew
I try to see the positive side
And take a different view.
I like to think she’s talented
For art, she has a passion
Just look at this “fringed kennel”
She’s nailed the retro fashion!
Cushions, I piled without a care
Like styling never mattered
But puppy sure took care of that
Now, the look is “scattered”.
Then there was the old couch
A bit dated, in anyone’s book
Puppy soon rose to the task
And gave it a fresh, new look.

You should see her latest piece
It’s by far the best one yet
I call it “Plant Pot – Deconstructed
Just how clever can she get?!
I love all of her “creations”
They’re stunning, to be sure
Although, if I’m to be honest…
I really don’t need any more!

First Kiss (There Can Be Only One!)

Sometimes, movies from the past
Can make you reminisce
“Highlander” makes me recall
The night of my first kiss.

‘Twas the mid-80’s then

I was a nerdy, frumpy teen
I felt sad and unattractive
Out with a boy? I’d never been.
My friend Nat felt bad for me
And soon had an idea
“Kath,” she said, “I’ve got a plan
It’ll be fun, don’t you fear”.
“You know my boyfriend, Tom?
Well, he’s got this mate…
Let’s us four go out together
Oh, it’s going to be great!”
The big night soon came around
With nerves, I felt quite sick
We headed into Melbourne town
To catch a brand new flick.
The boy and I sat, in silence
As Connor McLeod lopped heads
Till Tom turned ’round to his mate
“You’re not here for the movie,” he said.
I was, of course, quite mortified
And blushed the brightest pink
I’ll spare the details of what came next
You can just imagine, I think.
It ended up being our only date
That’s OK – I wasn’t peeved
For, despite the awkwardness
The “first kiss” goal was achieved. 💏
I’d found a new classic movie
With a killer soundtrack by Queen
The night really was a success
Out with a boy? Yes, I’d been!
